  1. 2c red lentils
  2. golfball of tamarind
  3. 1tsp mustard seed
  4. shallot
  5. 4tbsp sambhar powder
  6. fry spices in oil on med/hi for 30 seconds to a minute.
  7. add shallot and fry
  8. add lentils and cook in 3-4 cups water until done
  9. add sambhar powder and tamarind, cook additional 15 minutes.
  10. salt as needed
