2c red lentils
golfball of tamarind
1tsp mustard seed
shallot
4tbsp sambhar powder
fry spices in oil on med/hi for 30 seconds to a minute.
add shallot and fry
add lentils and cook in 3-4 cups water until done
add sambhar powder and tamarind, cook additional 15 minutes.
salt as needed
